BTEC Level 1 Construction and the built environment
This introductory course to construction explores the trades of bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating and electrical installation.
In bricklaying pupils learn to lay bricks and blocks in different bonds. In carpentry and joinery pupils learn how to construct a variety of woodwork joints and then use these joint types to construct a small table, dartboard cabinet and toolbox. In painting and decorating, pupils learn to prepare different types of surfaces and then apply different oil-based and water-based paint. They will also attempt paint designs and wallpapering. In electrical installation, pupils learn how to connect various electrical components and then use these skills to wire up a lighting rig and basic ring main.
In all units, pupils are also assessed on the need to work safely and responsibly in the workshop and to keep a safe, clean and tidy work environment.
This course is an ideal route into the level 2 construction qualifications we offer for post 16 pupils, many of which go on to become apprentices in the construction industry.
